Fusion Pilates, also known as Reformer Pilates, has won the hearts of many fitness enthusiasts and become one of MyFitness’s most popular group workouts. And it’s no surprise – it combines Pilates, strength training, and great music into a complete workout experience that challenges even the muscles you never knew you had. But what makes Fusion Pilates so special, and who is it suitable for?

What Is Fusion Pilates?

Fusion Pilates is a group workout performed on a specialised reformer machine, combining classic Pilates exercises with fitness movements, stretches, and bends. The result is a full-body workout that helps strengthen muscles, improve posture, and develop mobility and body awareness.

Unlike traditional mat Pilates, Fusion Pilates uses a reformer – a specialised piece of exercise equipment with a moving carriage and spring system that allows the resistance of each exercise to be adjusted. This provides a varied challenge for the muscles and makes even seemingly simple movements surprisingly effective.

But this isn’t just another Pilates class. Fusion Pilates combines the principles of Pilates with elements of strength training, accompanied by great music and a trainer-guided pace. The result is a workout that brings together controlled movement, muscle engagement, and a feel-good experience.

Why Is Fusion Pilates So Popular?

The appeal of Fusion Pilates lies in the fact that it’s both effective and gentle on the body. Although the class involves no jumping or high heart rates, that doesn’t mean your muscles get to rest. Quite the opposite – controlled, precise movements engage both major muscle groups and smaller stabilising muscles.

The workout focuses on the entire body, with particular emphasis on core muscles, balance, and movement control. Regular training helps improve strength, mobility, and posture. This makes Fusion Pilates a great complement to other forms of exercise, whether you prefer working out at the gym, running, or attending other group fitness classes.

The atmosphere of the class also plays an important role. Music, a motivating instructor, and working out together create a positive energy, while focusing on the exercises helps you switch off from everyday worries. Those 50 minutes are an opportunity to focus entirely on yourself.

Fusion Pilates – 3 Questions Answered by Eva Ottas

Is Fusion Pilates suitable for beginners? How does it differ from traditional Pilates? And is it more of a strength workout or a stretching session? MyFitness Head of Training Eva Ottas answers three of the most frequently asked questions.

1. Is Fusion Pilates suitable for beginners who have never tried Pilates before?

Yes! Fusion Pilates is suitable for both beginners and experienced fitness enthusiasts, and no previous Pilates experience is required. Exercises can be adapted to suit your fitness level, and the instructor will guide you throughout the class. Young people aged 12 and over are also welcome to attend with a parent, while those aged 15 and over can participate independently. MyFitness also offers Fusion Pilates classes specifically designed for the 65+ age group.

2. How Does Fusion Pilates Differ from Traditional Pilates?

The main difference is that Fusion Pilates takes place on a specialised Pilates machine called a reformer, while traditional mat Pilates is performed on the floor. Fusion Pilates combines classic Pilates exercises with elements of strength training, offering a varied and effective workout designed for a group fitness setting.

The reformer also helps improve body awareness and perform exercises with greater control. Its moving carriage and straps provide feedback on your movements, helping you recognise whether you’re performing each exercise correctly.

3. Is Fusion Pilates More About Strength Training or Stretching and Improving Mobility?

Fusion Pilates is primarily a muscular endurance workout. The reformer’s special springs create resistance, keeping your muscles engaged throughout the session. Although the class also includes stretching and extension exercises and focuses on posture, the main emphasis is on training the muscles.

Unlike traditional strength training, the main goal of Fusion Pilates is not to build muscle mass, but to improve muscular endurance, body control, and overall physical fitness.

Who Is Fusion Pilates Suitable For?

One of the biggest advantages of Fusion Pilates is its versatility. The workout is suitable for both those who are just starting to exercise regularly and experienced fitness enthusiasts looking to add variety to their usual workout routine.

Fusion Pilates can be particularly beneficial for people with a sedentary lifestyle who want to improve mobility, strengthen their core muscles, and pay more attention to their posture. Stretching and controlled movements offer a welcome change from long hours spent sitting at a computer.

It’s also a great choice for those who prefer lower-intensity workouts that don’t significantly raise their heart rate but still want to give their muscles a good challenge. Since the reformer’s resistance can be adjusted, the difficulty of the exercises can be adapted to suit individual fitness levels.

However, it’s important to remember that a lower heart rate doesn’t necessarily mean an easy workout. Fusion Pilates can be a real challenge even for those who regularly work out at the gym or attend high-intensity group fitness classes.

Is Fusion Pilates More About Stretching or Strength Training?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about Fusion Pilates. Although stretching, mobility, and body control play an important role in the workout, it is primarily a muscle-strengthening workout.

The reformer allows exercises to be performed with varying levels of resistance, keeping the muscles actively engaged throughout the workout. At the same time, the exercises require focus and precision – it’s not just about repeating movements, but also about performing them mindfully and with control.

This combination is exactly what makes Fusion Pilates so special. In a single class, you can build strength, improve mobility, and focus on muscles that may receive less attention during your usual workouts.

What Should You Know Before Your First Fusion Pilates Class?

If the reformer seems complicated at first or you’ve never tried Pilates before, there’s no need to worry. During Fusion Pilates classes, the instructor will guide you through the exercises and help you find suitable modifications when needed. You don’t have to get everything perfect on your first try!

When preparing for your first class, keep a few simple things in mind:

  • Bring grip socks. They are mandatory for the class. If you don’t have a pair yet, you can also purchase them at the club.
  • Arrive at least five minutes early. This will give you time to meet the instructor and familiarise yourself with the reformer and the class structure. Late arrivals will not be admitted to the class.
  • Wear comfortable workout clothes. Choose clothing that allows you to move and stretch freely.
  • Bring a water bottle and an open mind. Getting used to a new workout takes time, and the movements will become more familiar with each class.

The most important thing is to give it a try! You don’t need to be flexible, strong, or have any previous Pilates experience – all you need is the desire to get moving and discover something new.
