Sometimes a great journey begins with a simple desire to try something new. That’s how the HYROX journey of two MyFitness trainers began, taking them from the gym to international competitions in London, Finland, and Latvia in just a few months. During this time, they faced challenges, learned valuable lessons, and experienced the joy of setting personal records and getting to the podium.

In their stories, they share how HYROX helped them develop endurance, strength, and mental toughness, and why consistency is often more important than perfection. They also speak candidly about their competitive experiences, the importance of teamwork, and lessons that can inspire anyone considering HYROX or any other athletic challenge.

If someone had told us last fall that in a few months we would be standing on the starting line of the HYROX competition in London, competing in Finland, and ending the spring in Latvia with a personal best and a podium finish, we probably would have smiled and said, “Let’s look at the first training session first.”

But that’s exactly how it went.

This story isn’t just about three competitions. It’s about consistency, cooperation, becoming friends with discomfort, and what a single athletic challenge can teach a person.

How did it all begin?

In the fall, we started HYROX training with a pretty standard idea – to try something new.

HYROX seemed intriguing because it combines running and functional training in a way that tests endurance, strength, and mental toughness. Unlike many other sports, just a good running form or strong muscles aren’t enough. Success requires the entire puzzle coming together.

At first, some elements seemed intimidating and unfamiliar – sled pushes, sled pulls, burpee broad jumps. In the video, it all looks much easier than in real life.

We spent the first few months learning. We learned technique, got to know our bodies, and learned about the importance of consistency in training.

The secret to HYROX’s success lies not in perfection, but in consistency. HYROX teaches that big results come from small, consistently repeated steps.

First big test: HYROX London

At the end of March, the long-awaited moment arrived – our first HYROX Women’s Doubles Open tournament in London. Before a first competition, many questions always arise:

Are we prepared enough?

Can we set the right pace?

Will we have enough strength to make it to the end?

Will everything go according to plan?

As usual, nothing ever goes exactly according to plan on race day. London taught us something valuable: no amount of training can fully prepare you for the energy, adrenaline, and emotion you experience at the start and finish.

The first HYROX gave us experience, and no training program can replace experience.

HYROX Finland: When time is slower, but progress is greater

In early May, we competed in Finland. Our result was a few dozen seconds slower than in London. At first glance, this might seem like a step backwards, but sport quickly teaches us that progress can’t always be measured by a stopwatch alone. Sometimes the most valuable lessons are learned in competitions where things don’t go perfectly.

Looking back, we learned more in Finland than in London:

We have learned to feel the pace better.

We learned about our strengths and weaknesses.

We realized how important race day strategy is.

And most importantly, we realized that one result does not determine the level of an athlete.

HYROX Latvia: all the puzzle pieces finally fit together, or a personal best

At the end of May, we arrived in Latvia. It was our third competition in three months. By this point, we’d gained a lot of experience, made mistakes, and honed the details. This time, everything felt more natural, even though we started very early – at 8:00, meaning our alarm went off at 5:00. But overall, we were less nervous, more confident, had a clearer plan, and used our energy more wisely.

As a result, we set a new personal record and took 2nd place in our age group.

Of course, the podium was a nice bonus, but the real victory was realizing how much we’d improved our results in just a few months. It’s that feeling when you realize the work you’ve been putting in day after day is finally paying off.

7 key lessons from our HYROX journey

  1. Don’t wait for the perfect moment

If we waited for perfect form or complete confidence, we might never make it to the start. Sometimes you just need to sign up and get started!

  1. Technique saves more energy than brute force

HYROX quickly teaches that smart movements are often more important than excessive force, especially with sled pushes, sled pulls, and wall balls.

  1. Running is a key element

Many at HYROX focus solely on strength events. In reality, a large part of the race is spent running. Good running ability helps to conserve energy during competitions.

  1. Recovery is part of the training

Sleep, nutrition, fluid intake, and rest days should not be neglected; they are part of the result.

  1. Compare yourself only to yesterday’s version of yourself

There will always be someone faster, stronger, or more experienced. The most useful comparison is whether you’re better than you were a month or a year ago.

  1. Trusting your partner changes everything

Doubles competitions teach cooperation. Sometimes one person has better luck than the other. It’s important to understand that you’re working toward a common goal.

  1. Discomfort is not the enemy

The greatest progress usually occurs where discomfort begins. HYROX taught us to embrace discomfort rather than avoid it.

What would we recommend to someone who wants to try HYROX?

  • Start with a light load and simple elements, do not try to do everything at once in the first week.
  • Constantly improve your running technique.
  • Master the technique under the guidance of a trainer.
  • Run competition simulations from time to time.
  • Don’t be discouraged by the results you see on social media.
  • Enjoy the process, not just the finish line.

Gratitude for the journey

Looking back, it seems incredible how much can happen in just a few months. Early morning and late evening workouts. High-intensity interval training. Long runs. Laughter. Fatigue. Nervousness at the start. The thrill of crossing the finish line. It was all part of a journey we will definitely remember.

We are truly grateful to everyone who supported us along the way – trainers, training partners, family, friends, and the MyFitness community.

Special thanks to our partners who have always been there for us: MyFitness, Nike representative stores, FitShop, Red Bull Estonia, Nick’s, Tere dairy products, Iglupark.

Sometimes the most valuable thing in sports is not the medals or results, but the people you share this journey with!

What’s next?

Time will tell, but one thing is certain: HYROX gave us much more than just competition results. It taught us not to be afraid to try new things, to trust the process, and to believe that consistency takes us further than we initially think. And sometimes that’s the greatest victory.
